The Black Swan! :)

Beofre our Christmas Break, we had our Transition Year Fashion Show and for the past three months we have been working on our outfit! Each group was given a colour scheme, we were given black and white so we decided to base our design on the theme of the movie The Black Swan! The Black Swan is set on the famous ballet "Swan Lake" which consists of a white swan "Odete" who turns evil and turns black! We combined these two swans to make our piece! We created a simple black feathered one-shouldered top which we dyed, sewed and fitted onto our model and then we put more emphasis on to the skirt. We wanted a tutu styled skirt but a contemporary feel to it! So we used the top of the jeans as the high-wasited part of our skirt and sewed on multiple layers of black and white netting onto it! We also dyed the legs of the jeans black and sewed them into gloves :) After weeks of being the underdogs of the home-ec class we actually put in lots of effort into the last week and we came second in the end! :O Well done to the Moulin Rouge group who won you were fab!

English Novel Review - "The Help" by Katherine Stockett

Along with the other classic novels such as “Gone with the Wind” and “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Kathryn Stockett presents an epic tale full of wisdom, justice and truth captivated in every page. The reason these novels share their uniqueness is that they are all intertwined with the injustice theme of racism.

Set in the 1960’s in Jackson, Mississippi “The Help” is a truly unforgettable story based on three inspiring women:  Aibileen Clark, Minny Jackson and Skeeter Phelan. Aibileen and Minny are the two primary women representing "the help”. But we soon learn that these two women are not alike, and as a result, they hint at the diversity of women who do serve as "the help" in Jackson. We are then introduced to the courageous Skeeter Phelan. Miss Skeeter is a 23-year-old white woman with a cotton trust fund and a college degree. She devotes herself, at considerable risk, to a book featuring the real stories of the black women who work for the white families in her hometown of Jackson.

 I truly felt a connection with the characters of the Help. I empathised with each character and found all of them inspiring in a unique way. Aibileen Clark was the character I could relate to the most.  I wanted to sit in her kitchen and listen to as many stories as she had to tell. I wanted to hear her laughter whilst gossiping on the phone with Minny, but most of all I wanted to comfort her when I learned about the tragedy that was brought upon her son, Treelore.

Ms.Stockett presented the unjust life of segregation. But, we have to accept it happened and it is real as our history today.

The author really forced me to think about not only what racial differences have done to our history, but to also consider women’s roles in American history. What stuck with me throughout my read is the truth that a woman’s heart and her love for others has nothing to do with the colour of her skin, the family she derives from or to amounts of money she may or may not possess. “A woman’s heart is like no other and a mother’s heart is expansive as the sea itself”

A very effective writing technique used in this novel was the way in which the dialogue was written. It was written in a way to capture the pure essence of the southern American accent. “Y’all holler for me if you need me” In my opinion this was the most effective writing technique used in the novel.

In my opinion Ms. Stockett’s outlook is optimistic. She reminded us the fundamental truths but towards the end of the novel highlighted them in a bright way as if positively hoping that someday racism will not be an issue.

If our class got the opportunity to read this inspiring novel, I think all the values, insights and morals will stick with all my classmates and have a significant impact on their life.

I just cannot believe that tomorrow is Christmas Eve! :O It has crept on us very suddenly! Even the exams went really fast! I thought I'd let you know that overall the exams were okay! Except for Irish which was a disaster but just so glad that they are all over now! On the last day one of the Transition Year classes class Fodla held a Christmas Party and then they went bowling! Unfortunately I was sick on that day so I was unable to attend! But I heard it was a alot of craic! :) Also I want to thank whoever had me for Kris Kindle cause I absolutely loved my pressie! I'm wearing it right now actually! :P

what are we supposed to do now..? :(

Our school musical "The Sound of Music" is now officially over! All the buzz and excitement has gone and now were just left with all the memories! I just wanted to dedicate this short post to  thank everyone involved! From the response we received it seems that all our time and effort has certainly paid off! :) I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with my time now! Even though it has only been a week I already miss everyone so much! I'm so glad I took part in it, because the musical has been by far the highlight of T.Y by far! :D Here's a few pictures of the cast and dancers on and off stage!

How many days till Christmas?! Only 10 more days to go! :)

Even though we are in Transition Year we still have Christmas Exams and I'm starting to get worried if all the projects will get done in time to be marked! :O So this week has been extremely hectic! But on the up side there's only 10 more days till Christmas!! :) This is such a gorgeous song and always gets me in the mood for Christmas! <3

Nutcracker Suite :)

Last Friday all the Transition years were taken to the O'Reilly theatre to watch the Irish National Youth Ballet Company's performance of the Nutcracker Suite and Snow Queen! The reason we were taken to this particular show because our classmate Laura was performing in it!She was amazing and was the most gorgeous snowflake I've ever seen! :') All the performers were students and they were all very professional! :O The show was at such a high standard! It was a really fun day out and well done to everyone involved!! :D

one down.... three to go!! :D

Last night, we had our first performance of our school musical "The Sound of Music". Taking in mind we had never had a full dress rehearsal of act one or act two.. it was a success!! :)

The musical began at eight but all cast members arrived at half six to get our make-up done by the make-up crew! Who all did a great job! :) Then we had to put on our first costume and get miked! At the beginning we are all very nervous but excited! We had to wait backstage until the directors called us to go on stage! The wardrobe team had all our costumes ready to go and they helped us for extremely quick changes! They were amazing! :) Apart from a few small mistakes we got through it and I'm sure by the end of the week its going to be a brilliant show!

Now since last night, cant wait for the show tonight!! :)
